RareDex is a plant-journaling service from Japan, designed to preserve the time and growth you share with each plant through photos and words. From the day a plant comes home to an ordinary day years later, every moment can remain part of that plant's own record. You can revisit your own plants, discover records shared by others, and one day pass a plant and its history on to its next caretaker.

Pass the plant—and the time preserved with it—to its next caretaker.
RareDex calls it a Plant Handoff: the plant moves forward together with its photos, records, and Plant Passport.
To open a handoff, your account must be at least one month old, include an established set of photo records, and have a record for that plant from within the past month.

Why RareDex began
Every plant’s story, and the care behind it
A plant photo shared on social media. By the time you post that plant again, so many other posts sit in between. Simply comparing its growth means searching for the earlier photo first.
What if there were a place to see one plant’s records together? That thought was the beginning of RareDex.
With an unfamiliar plant, I wanted to learn from people growing it well: their lights, where they kept it, and how often they watered. I wanted to understand the everyday care behind the beautiful photos.
As a collection grows, a personal journal becomes useful too. A lovely plant in a shop can leave you wondering: Have I grown this before? Could I still have one at home? I wanted to look back at my plants and their records wherever I was.
Buying plants brought other concerns. I had bought rare plants that turned out not to be what I believed they were. Finding a breeder I could trust, or a grower whose plant I might one day obtain a division of, was difficult.
Beyond a name and a single photo, I wanted to know who had grown a plant, and how. Its records could also help someone get to know it before bringing it home.
That is why RareDex aims to be a place to keep each plant’s story, meet other growers, and welcome a plant or pass it on to its next grower.
