In Lalique’s press photograph, coral spirals circle the surface of a clear vessel. Straight lines nearly disappear. One arc layers into another; polished sections sharply return the white background, while satin areas softly hold color. It extracts the movement of a plant opening without depicting the plant itself.
Tourbillons was created in 1926. Lalique’s official release and Musée Lalique credit the design to Suzanne Lalique-Haviland, daughter of René Lalique. On June 15, 2026, its centennial anniversary collection with coral patina launched in Japan.
Leaving the Unfurling Motion without Copying the Plant
Its source was a fern sprouting and opening. Young fern fronds can extend with tips curled inward, gradually unfurling. Tourbillons translates that instant not into realistic veins, but repeated curves. Motion is felt without knowing the plant; afterward, the memory of coiled leaves appears within crystal.
Musée Lalique says the original used clear pressed glass with black enamel. Dark lines strengthened the botanical outline and Art Deco geometry. The glass version continued through 1951 and returned in crystal in 2005. Even with the same form, materials hold light differently. Across a century, the vessel moved through glass, enamel, crystal, and color rather than stopping at one finished state.
Coral Gives Depth to Clear Spirals
Creative director Marc Larminaux was entrusted with the centennial edition. The new coral patina leaves color along relief instead of covering the clear surface. In official photographs, outer lines stand as outlines while refraction layers them elsewhere inside. One spiral multiplies and disappears as the viewing angle changes.
Color does not prescribe seasonal flowers. White branches emphasize clarity; deep-green leaves create near-complementary tension with coral. Empty, the vase becomes sculpture receiving light. Though a tool supporting plants, it leaves botanical motion in a room even when plants are absent.
RareDex notices that the fern was not reproduced precisely. Removing leaf outline and retaining only opening force made room for materials and colors a century later. Botanical motifs need not paste flowers or leaves onto surfaces; they can move growth direction, overlap, and repetition into tangible form.
If Bringing It Home, Include Weight in the Scene
Japan’s centennial collection includes coral Small, standard, and XXL versions and a limited gold-leaf XXL. As of July 23, 2026, Lalique Japan listed prices including tax of ¥242,000 for Small, ¥1,100,000 for standard, and ¥2,706,000 for XXL. Difference is not height alone: the standard is 20 cm in diameter and over 6 kg, giving it the presence of small architecture. Confirm current sales officially or at a boutique.
Weight as well as dimension determines placement. Official press material lists Small at 12.6 cm high and about 1.43 kg, standard at 20.8 cm and about 6.74 kg, and XXL at 26.7 cm and about 15 kg. Rather than place casually on a slender console or light shelf, confirm load capacity and depth and leave clearance from passing hands.
Some days hold one branch; others receive light while empty. Vessel and plant may be less a fixed completed pairing than a seasonal edit of balance. Holding a fern’s unfurling speed in a century of crystal, Tourbillons returns different lines each time it is seen.
