Susuki and Autumn Flowers for a Moon-Viewing Evening

Chrysanthemums and gentians for Japan’s Mid-Autumn Moon on 25 September

Silver susuki plumes, rounded chrysanthemums and blue-violet gentians bring contrasting heights and shapes to an autumn arrangement. Japan’s Mid-Autumn Moon falls on 25 September in 2026, an occasion to bring seasonal flowers indoors before the evening begins.

The Mid-Autumn Moon falls on 25 September

The Mid-Autumn Moon is the moon of the 15th day of the eighth month in the traditional calendar. Astronomical full moon is determined by the positions of the Moon and Sun, so the two need not fall on the same date. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan gives this year’s full moon as 1:49 a.m. on 27 September, Japan time: after the celebration on the 25th, and during the night that begins on the 26th.

The distinction offers a small conversation for this year’s moon-viewing evening. Choosing flowers with an eye on the weather, or turning a plume slightly as dusk arrives, makes the preparation part of the pleasure.

Round chrysanthemums and airy plumes

Aoyama Flower Market’s autumn 2026 selection includes moon-viewing bouquets with chrysanthemums and susuki. Rounded flowers and long grass stems make an appealing contrast. For an arrangement at home, blue-violet gentians are another option for an accent of colour.

For a simple arrangement at home, begin with one chrysanthemum and a slightly taller stem of susuki behind it. Gentians placed lower create a change in height that draws the eye towards the plumes. This is one way to work with the plants’ forms, not a prescribed number of stems or a fixed shape.

Susuki in the light

Susuki, Miscanthus sinensis, belongs to the grass family. The opening photograph shows a stand in Hyogo Prefecture, with silver-white plumes above dense green leaves. Their fine hairs catch the light, softening the appearance of the flower heads.

In a vase, angling some plumes to the side rather than facing them all forward can give the arrangement a lighter feel. Leaving a little of the stems visible between the flowers brings out the contrast with the rounded chrysanthemums.

A stand of susuki can be enjoyed as part of its landscape. Choosing cut stems from a florist brings the season indoors without disturbing wild plants. On a dining table, position the plumes so they do not touch food or tableware.

Autumn flowers for an evening indoors

There is no need for a large bouquet or a special vessel. Rounded flowers and long plumes in a familiar vase can give an everyday shelf an autumn character. On a clear evening, the moon draws the eye outside; on a cloudy one, the flowers remain close at hand. Silver susuki brings a quiet seasonal accent to the room.
