The Audience Area Is the Botanical Garden’s Largest Cultivated Landscape
Hendrie Park is the largest cultivated garden managed by Royal Botanical Gardens. It joins gardens with distinct roles: the Rose Garden; the fragrance-focused Scented Garden; the Helen M. Kippax Garden, which presents Ontario native plants by habitat; and the Healing Garden of medicinal plants. The concert is a special event after normal garden hours, and official instructions direct entry from RBG Centre through a tunnel.
On August 20 local time, gates open at 6:30 p.m., DJ Better Love begins at 8:00, and BADBADNOTGOOD at 9:15. General admission is CAD 55 plus tax and service fees, with advance purchase required. No chairs are provided in general admission, so guests bring folding chairs or blankets. Making one’s own place on the lawn becomes the first difference from an ordinary hall performance.
Walk Among Roses and Sculpture Before the Music
The August garden is better read as a passage toward the next flowers than through the single phrase “full bloom.” Hendrie Park’s Rose Garden is generally at its best from June through September, while the official bloom report says crocosmia, milkweeds, echinacea, phlox, Russian sage, and other perennials carry color as the garden waits for the roses’ next flush. A design combining different flowering periods sustains summer without making roses the only protagonists.
ANCHORBALL: A Curious Art Journey by sculptor Ken Kelleher also runs through September 20. Eighteen sculptures up to approximately 12 feet high stand in the gardens, with an added digital layer in augmented reality. The concert notice recommends arriving early to see the works. Rather than separating plants, sculpture, and music into different purposes, the route walked becomes the evening program.

BADBADNOTGOOD’s official page identifies the Toronto-based group as Chester Hansen, Alex Sowinski, and Leland Whitty. Their music moves among soul jazz, alternative hip-hop, and experimental electronic music. The 2024 Mid Spiral recordings welcomed multiple musicians across three chapters, foregrounding a changing performance flow rather than one fixed form.
Hearing that music in a garden does not mean using plants to explain the songs. Walls and ceilings define sound in a hall; here tree height, lawn width, fading light, and each person’s chosen seat divide the ways one performance is received. The botanical garden is not decoration, but a space constructing the distance between performance and audience.
